The Art of Writing...About the Art of Writing

Description: This workshop will dive into the complexities of writing about writing through ars poetica: poetry written about the art of poetry. Starting with a quick refresher of the genre, we will move on to exciting contemporary poets who bring ars poetica into the 21st century, such as Danez Smith, Aerik Francis, and Oliver Baez Bendorf. Though this workshop is grounded in poetics, writers of all genres can take away insights on the value of writing about writing! Will you write an ars poetica or an anti poetica?

About the Presenter: SG Huerta is a queer Xicanx writer from Dallas. They are the Managing and Poetry Editor of Abode Press. They are the author of two poetry chapbooks, The Things We Bring with Us (Headmistress Press 2021) and Last Stop (Defunkt Magazine 2023), and the forthcoming nonfiction chapbook GOOD GRIEF (fifth wheel press 2025).
